Watch: The Beginning and the End

Troiscouleurs is a French magazine dedicated to cinema and culture. On their Vimeo channel, they have neatly spliced together the first and final shots from the work of legendary filmmakers. It makes for a powerful look at how their work connected and changed over time.

The video includes Alice Guy-Blaché, Charlie Chaplin, John Ford, Carl Theodor Dreyer, Jean Renoir, Yasujirō Ozu, Ingmar Bergman and Stanley Kubrick amongst others.

Under their video, Troiscouleurs explain the concept:

What happens when we see the first and the last shot of a director's filmography at the same time? The image that opened their first film and the one that closed their last one- 20, 30, 40, even 50 years later-, do they belong together? Do they have something in common?
In the spirit of the brilliant series "First and Final frames" by Jacob T. Swinney, we take a side-by-side look at the first and last shots of some of the most renown directors.
